“Right.”

Mitch decided he didn’t like this girl. Not one bit.

“Why am I here again?”

“You’ve been breaking the rules,” Blair said bluntly, his voice discouraging. Mitch colored.

“Trinity is in charge of security. She has a good eye for detail,” Grell explained. “And we’ve noticed some disturbances.”

“You’ve been using your skillz,” Trinity declared. Jumping onto the nearest bench, she placed her hands on the sensor pad. With a flicker, the screen came to life. Trinity opened a folder and selected a document. As it loaded, hundreds of links filled the pages. Scanning through them recklessly, Trinity picked a link. Security camera footage played once it loaded.

The scene depicted a busy climbing gym. In the corner, high above the other climbers, a familiar form climbed up the multi-colored knobs. Little more than halfway, the figure stopped. A moment passed before the screen glitched. After the glitch, the climber began again. He reached the top and tapped the bell before rappelling down to meet two other familiar people.

Trinity turned her head to peer innocently at Mitch. “Was that you?”

Mitch’s first instinct was to say “No, of course not! I’m not that stupid!”, but the truth prohibited him. “Yeah, that was me.”

“Why did you do it?” Grell questioned.

Mitch’s face reddened. “It was stupid. I just wanted to show off.”

“Heck yeah, it was stupid!” Trinity tittered. Sage and Windsor shared exasperated glances. Apparently, Mitch wasn’t the only one who shared a less than complimentary opinion of Miss Rainbow.

Grell sighed. “Well, Mitch, that was technically against the rules. I congratulate you for projecting so well, but... rules are rules. We never use our skills without good reason.”

“Oh, yeah, I forgot about this!” Trinity declared as she pulled up another document. Instead of a video, the top of the paper read “STATUS REPORT: Mitchell Holliday”. Underneath the title, a report detailed a certain instance concerning a certain Amy Schuler and how Darkening had been used during a conversation. Trinity scrolled down to show another report describing a failed projection and immediate Darkening. Agents had been deployed to cement darkening.

“I won’t do it again, I swear,” Mitch said. “I just got.... I just got excited. I was having a lot of fun.”

Sage nodded sympathetically. “Yeah, I get it. It’s hard to fight the temptation.”

“It’s just so easy,” Mitch muttered.

“You’re lucky it’s so easy,” Grell added. “Most would be in extreme trouble right now. Failed darkening or projections are serious business.”

“Crucially so,” Windsor added. Mitch sensed the criticism acutely.

“...How did you find out about it?” Mitch asked. He thought he had been completely alone in his thoughts.

“Reavers monitor the dream-state and reality 24/7. It’s a mental net, meant to catch any reaving activity. Anything above the normal range is reported and put into the records. With your skill, you stick out,” Grell explained.

“Like a sore thumb,” Trinity said.

“Or a fluorescent jacket,” Sage added.

“Or a⸺”

“I get it!” Mitch snapped. His mistakes were embarrassing enough without his peers teasing him. “I know I went too far. I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.
